Artwork Subject Matter:
Lake Menomin was christened in 1902 by Senator James H. Stout as it became a holding pond for the logging industry of the Knapp Stout & Co. Lumber Company.

It was in 1958, however, when Northern States Power Co. was granted permission to erect the present dam that the lake’s present size and shape was imagined.
There was controversy, however, as Native American
burial mounds became inundated with water.

Today we seldom think of the lake as a reality of recent history.
It is surrounded by public lands, parks and nature tails and is enjoyed by wildlife and humans alike.

Don Austrum of Menomonie, Wisconsin is a retired
Art Educator, having taught for thirty-five years at
 Boyceville Community Schools.
